The word “hyperthermia” comes from the Greek of which original meaning is “heat” or “overheat”. Hyperthermia is a physical therapy in which heat is transferred to the body to achieve its treatment goal through all kinds of heat sources. Common hyperthermia can be divided into three categories, i.e., diathermy, photo-thermal therapy and conductive heat therapy.

The blood circulation of the cancer cell population is quite special, as its blood capillary is fragile and the population has low heat dissipation. Therefore, when the whole-body temperature reaches 40.5℃, the temperature of local tumor tissue can be up to 45℃ or above. The sustained high temperature for a short period makes the tumor tissue and cancer cell die and encourages apoptosis but normal histocyte survives. In the mean time, high temperatures can damage tumor angiogenesis and inhibit the infiltration and metastasis of tumor cell through inhibiting the vitality of vascular endothelial growth factor in the tumor and matrix metalloproteinases.

Hyperthermia can boost the immune system, strengthen the vitality and immunity of Natural Killer cells (NK cells), T lymphocyte and macrophage. Meta-protein of tumor cell and breakdown products of necrotic tissue produced by hyperthermia can boost specific immunity for anti-tumors and enhance body immunity to fight tumors.

Additionally, hyperthermia can open up the pores and cause people to sweat, which is a way to detoxify your body. If certain drugs are infused to the body during hyperthermia, their efficacy can be significantly improved. Moreover, hyperthermia can increase the sensitivity of chemotherapy and local radiotherapy.

Local and Regional Hyperthermia
Local hyperthermia means a heating method in which the heating range is limited to including pathologic changes in local tissues without the overall rise of temperature in the body. While regional hyperthermia is another form of local hyperthermia, with heat sources such as, microwave, radio frequency and ultrasonic waves. Some researchers include it with whole body hyperthermia because it can cause the rise of temperature of the whole body. The therapeutic range of regional hyperthermia includes early, medium and advanced malignant tumors in various parts of the trunk, except for the head, neck, and limbs.

Whole Body Hyperthermia
Whole body hyperthermia refers to a hyperthermia method whereby various heating methods are used to raise the temperature of the human body to reach the therapeutic temperature which is maintained for a certain period of time.

The heating methods for whole body hyperthermia are divided into three categories: biological method, extracorporeal circulation method and superficial heating method. The biological method aims to heat the body by injection of microbial or biological agent, such as early injection of Coley toxin or short corynebacterium. It is rarely applied at present, because the degree of sensitivity reaction by the human body to the pyrogen is unpredictable and the heating temperature and time can not be easily controlled, resulting in high risk. The extracorporeal circulation method is to take some of the blood out of the body and heat it in vitro to a predetermined temperature with a special device, and then re-circulate it into the body to achieve elevated body temperature. This method is not popular due to high cost equipment and an elaborate procedural requirement.

The superficial heating method refers to thermal energy transferred to the body by radiation or conduction, such as infrared radiation, hot water bath, hot wax bath, and electric blanket wrapping. However, hot water bath, hot wax bath, and electric blanket wrapping have been rarely applied since the 1980s due to their various defects. Infrared radiation has been widely accepted clinically due to its definite heating effect, fewer side effects, easy monitoring, and lower cost.

Endoceliac Chemohyperthermia
Endoceliac chemohyperthermia refers to the method that the wherein liquid with chemotherapeutic drugs is infused into the body cavity and kept for a certain amount of time using the heating equipment, aiming to cure malignant tumors. The current common chemohyperthermias include intraperitoneal chemohyperthermia, intrapleural hyperthermic infusion chemotherapy, bladder chemohyperthermia, and pericardial cavity chemohyperthermia which are under research. Endoceliac chemohyperthermia is characterized by high concentrations of local drugs, and low systemic toxicity. It is the most recognized, mature and common method of hyperthermia.

1.Intraperitoneal Chemohyperthermia
Intraperitoneal chemohyperthermia, as a relatively mature method applied clinically, it aims to heat the liquid with the chemotherapeutic drug which is filled into the abdominal cavity and kept in constant temperature. Under the condition of high temperature, the liquidity of tumor cell membranes increases, and then the chemotherapeutic drug with synergistic effect enters and congregates there. Since the concentration of the drug in the abdominal cavity tissue is much higher than that in plasma, it can kill any intraperitoneal metastatic carcinoma without great systemic toxicity. For this reason, it is widely used on the intraperitoneal digestive tract, gynecological tumors and ascites.

The indications of intraperitoneal chemohyperthermia mainly include treatment on peritoneal wide metastatic carcinoma (including gastric cancer, carcinoma of the large intestine, ovarian cancer, biliary cancer, pancreatic carcinoma, and peritoneal pseudo mucous gland cancer); prevention of postoperative peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer, carcinoma of the large intestine, ovarian cancer, biliary cancer, pancreatic carcinoma, peritoneal pseudo mucous gland cancer; and treatment on malignant ascites. Its contraindications include; patients with intraperitoneal wide synechia, abdominal cavity with multiple tumors, complete intestinal obstruction, end-stage cachexia and severe cruor-promoting disorder.

2.Intrapleural Chemohyperthermia
As for the intrapleural chemohyperthermia, researchers adopt various methods and different apparatuses, but certain risks are present due to various physical limitations, such as vacuum sealing of the chest cavity, while the therapeutic result is invigorative and its efficiency on a malignant hydrothorax can be as high as 88% ~ 100%.

Indications of intrapleural chemohyperthermia include: ① cancer hydrothorax accompanied by non-small cell lung cancer; ② diffused cancer focuses in the pleura; ③ breakage of tumor during therapy; ④ less residue of recurrent cancer after resection; ⑤ reoccurrence and metastasis after surgery. Its contraindications include: ① patients with poor constitutional condition (KPS score＜60); ② patients with severe cardio-pulmonary dysfunction; ③ patients with tumor metastasis in the liver, brain, and bone; ④ patients with tuberculosis at tumor position; ⑤ fever, body temperature＞38 ℃, or accompanied by active infection; ⑥leukocytes or blood platelets less than normal and patients with bleeding tendency.

3.Bladder Chemohyperthermia
Through modern hyperthermic technology, bladder chemohyperthermia aims to heat the perfusate continuously and maintain it for a certain period of time. The sensitization and synergistic effects of hyperthermic chemotherapy, which, with its definite anti-cancer properties and pharmacokinetics advantage, can effectively kill the free cancer cells in the bladder, eliminate smaller residual cancer foci, prevent and cure bladder cancer and its postoperative recurrence, and improve the clinical therapeutic effect on bladder cancer. It is a therapeutic method characterized by low cost, effectiveness, simple operation, less toxic and less side- effects, fewer complications, and repeatable treatments.

Indications for bladder chemohyperthermia include the following: postoperative patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, bladder cancer in situ, mastoid tumors which are distributed widely and with ablation difficulty, palliative therapy of invasive bladder cancer which cannot tolerate surgery or multiple superficial bladder tumors which can not receive any surgery or unsuitable for surgery due to poor body condition, preoperative cooperative therapies on invasive bladder cancers, and prevention of high-risk patients from tumor evolution.

Its contraindications include invasive tumors which have penetrated the bladder wall, urinary tract infections, and bladder inflammation.

Studies have shown that the occurrence and development of cancer are closely related to the accumulation of all kinds of “toxins” in the body. The “toxins” not only include external harmful substance like the heavy metal, but also mutated cells, excessive free radicals and metabolic wastes. Choosing an effective way to eliminate these toxins is one of the significant treatment for cancer. The application of chelation therapy in cancer marks the progress of such therapy. Chelation therapy is a crucial part of Non-Toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment. It plays an important role in modern malignant tumor treatment.

Chelation Therapy mainly applies Vitamin C, Vitamin B17 and chelating drugs for cancer treatment.

Vitamin C is essential to the body and it is a common vitamin. Modern research has proven that Vitamin C can damage and kill cancer cell in a selective manner at pharmacologic concentration.

Vitamin B17 plays an important role in Non-Toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment for its special function against malignant tumor. In the 1950s, Dr. Krebs found Vitamin B17 and first applied it in malignant cancer treatment. The anti-cancer theory of Vitamin B17 put forward by Dr. Krebs consists of two parts. First, cyanide hydride can damage and kill cancer cells. Secondly, cyanide hydride conducts non-toxic metabolism in the body. Chelation and detoxification therapy is a treatment that applies NaFeEDTA through intravenous drip. The synergistic effect of Vitamin C and Vitamin K3
In recent years, many medical scientists have studied that Vitamin C and Vitamin K3 have strong synergistic anti-cancer effects. Belgian medical scientists Taper and American oncologist Gilloteaux et al worked together to make a further study on this synergistic anti-cancer effect. It showed that the combination of Vitamin C and Vitamin K3 can boost the DNA enzymes in the cancer cells. The anti-cancer pharmacological properties of Vitamin K3 are related to its chemical structure naphthoquinone. Naphthoquinone produces hydrogen sulfide and amine in   intracellular metabolism. This has a direct cytotoxicity and destroys cancer cells. So far, there is no report about treating cancer patients with Vitamin K3 alone. However, there are several positive reports of clinical trial in regards to the combination of Vitamin C and Vitamin K3 in treating cancer patients.

Ukrain
It has been proven that Ukrain can inhibit and dissolve 60 types of cancer cells (brain, ovary,colon, kidney cancer, small and non-small cell lung cancer, sarcoma, leukemia and lymphoma). Also, Ukrain can inhibit the cell cycle in pro-phase and meta-phase through single tubulin and induce apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cell (Jurkat, THP-1, MIA PaCa2, BxPC3 and AxPC1). Ukrain selectively induces apoptosis in cancer cells but has no effect on normal cells. In the past 20 years, Ukrain has been used as an adjuvant drug in cancer treatment and its anti-tumor mechanism remains uncertain. Besides enhancing immune function, Ukrain injection can inhibit the growth of cancer cells during gap 2 phase or mitotic period, and it can induce apoptosis in cancer cells. The mechanism of inducing apoptosis in cancer cells may be inducing mitochondrial membrane depolarization and boosting caspase. The inducing function of Ukrain comes from the extraction of alkaloids from the celandine. 

Cancer is the major killer harming human health. Surgery can remove visible tumor lesion, but it cannot remove residual malignant cells in the human body. Radiotherapy can kill localized tumor cells, but it would damage the surrounding healthy tissues. Chemotherapy can destroy part of sensitive cancer cells, but its toxicity inhibits bone marrow and reduces the human bodies’ resistance to fight the disease.

1.Oral Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine on Cancer
Oral administration of traditional Chinese decoction is the adoption of traditional Chinese medicine in treating cancer. These syndromes reflect not only the status and degree of the body’s internal Yin, Yang, Qi and blood disorders, but also the nature, location and extent of the environmental disorder in the body. 2.TCM Injection for Cancer Therapy
The clinical effect of TCM injection on malignant tumors has been preliminarily confirmed. The anti-tumor TCM injection acting on the human body is characterized by multiple directions and multiple targets, in line with the mechanism of multiple factors and multiple links of pathogenesis. Although the direct depression effect of TCM injection is weak compared with chemically-synthesized drugs, its application range is progressively wider due to its advantages such as less toxic and side effect, uneasy generation of drug resistance and obvious comprehensive anti-tumor effect. 3.External Application of TCM for Cancer Therapy
External therapy of TCM is characterized by obvious effects, no invasion, cheapness, easy acceptance, easy popularization, and no addiction; therefore it is of increasing interests to patients. At present, a variety of clinical methods are used comprehensively for root diseases, and they can not only “eliminate pathogenic factors” but also “strengthen the vital Qi”, highlighting the characteristics of TCM therapy. Routes of Administration
a.Transdermal drug delivery: The drugs are assisted by skin penetrant to penetrate into the epidermis which enters the capillaries, and then enter the blood and tissues through the capillaries; afterwards, they gather in the tumor location with rich blood vessels and exert their effects.

b.Umbilical compress therapy: It has the same advantages as those of the transdermal drug delivery above, and the umbilicus has high absorption and utilization rate of drugs. It has its own uniqueness for therapy on some diseases. Therefore, umbilical compress therapy can be used to relieve the pains caused by tumor infiltration and oppression on liver and part of intercostal nerves, upper and middle abdominal organs, and visceral peritoneum and viscera layers.

c.Acupoint injection: As for the acupoint drug administration, it brings about both quick drug effect and doubling of drug effect. Experiments show that meridian acupoint administration can amplify and enhance the effect of drugs.

d.Mucosal administration: The administration is made mainly through mouth, eyes, nasal mucosa, vagina, and rectal mucosa. As for the mucosal administration, its absorption rate is better than skin; with relatively stable drug effect and particularly high concentration of drugs in the administration sites, the drug effect is increased. However, we need to pay attention to the irritation and damage of the drugs on the skin and mucous membranes, to avoid the increase of sufferings of the patients.

e.Gargling or fumigation and washing therapy: Drugs are boiled into decoction which is gargled in mouth and disgorged without swallowing. It is mainly used for patients with oropharyngeal cancers, oral mucous membrane response caused by radiotherapy or chemotherapy, oral cancer, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Considering its special anatomical location, sipping application, mouthwash, blowing the nose and medical gas fumigation can be applied from time to time to increase the concentration of drugs on the focus site. These materials, such as mints, fortune eupatorium herb, and raw licorice, are commonly used.

Fumigation and washing: Fumigation and washing therapy means that drugs are boiled into hot decoction, which are then used to fumigate and wash the skin or affected places. For the patients with brachioneus caused by radical treatment of breast cancer, and lower leg swelling caused by the lower limb inguinal region lymph node metastasis, the fumigation and washing as well as dipping of the affected legs for detumescence can be conducted by decoction with rhizome of Sichuan lovage, frankincense, myrrh, plantain seed, and Indian bread. This is to relieve the suffering of the patients.

f.Enema: Enema is a method that drugs are made into liquid and injected into diseased regions through enema syringe which is inserted into the affected parts. For patients with colorectal cancer, apply enema with decoction of dandelion, coptis root, sargentgloryvine stem, prepared rhubarb, gleditsia sinensis, and pleione rhizome, allowing the drugs to reach the affected areas and act on the focuses directly through mucous membranes, which can attack evil toxicities, fight against cancers and relieve pains, thus improving the life quality of patients.

g.Foot bath: Cancer patients with high blood pressure, or head sweating or asthma can take foot bath with decoction of anemarrhena rhizome, cassia bark, peach kernel, and rhizome of Sichuan lovage cyathula officinalis, to disperse internal heat and induce Qi for recovery.

h.Esophageal paste: When patients have any difficulty with swallowing, they can triturate notoginseng, sal ammoniac, root of subprostrate sophora, arnebia root and etc…Which are combined with lotus root starch for swallowing; this can be helpful in improving the esophageal obstruction symptom.

i.External application of plaster: Longhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of TCM, the third factory of Shanghai TCM Pharmaceutical Factory, has developed the toad venom paste to treat malignant tumors. This prescription is a TCM adhesive plaster composed of 18 drugs, such as venom paste, aconite root, pricklyash root, lilac flower, cassia bark, asarum, Paris polyphylla, and safflower. This plaster can be used for various cancer pains, with sound therapeutic effects.

Acupuncture plays an important role in Non-Toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment. It has been a common method in cancer prevention. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that “the deficiency of vital Qi” is the cause of cancer occurrence and development, and treating diseases should focus on its root cause. Common Psychological Problems in Cancer Patients
The types of psychological reaction in cancer patients are related to personality, psychological traits, disease severity and knowledge about cancer. The psychological reactions in cancer patients can be divided into six stages of adjustment: shock, confusion, fear, disbelief and denial, depression and finally acceptance.

1.Experience Period: When patients learn about their laboratory report and know he is diagnosed with cancer, he is shocked and felt his whole world is shattered. He is in disbelief and felt doomed. He becomes numb and possibly faint, which is referred to as “diagnostic shock”. This shock lasts for a short time, probably a few hours or a few days.

2.Confusion Period: In this period, patients will be in disbelief and may deny the diagnosis. Concept
There is growing concern for radio frequency ablation (RFA) as it is the “new shining star” in minimally invasive cancer treatment.
