    Research Progress of Nutrition on Colon Cancer Prevention

    Abstract:Colorectal cancer has been strongly associated with nutrition. In the past 30 years, epidemiological studies have shown that obesity, intake of red meat, vegetable, fruit, alcohol, and calcium are closely related to this malignancy.

    Nutritional Support to One Case Diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer after Pancreatectomy

    Abstract:The pancreas is the body's second largest endocrine organ. It has exocrine and endocrine functions. Exocrine pancreatic fluid contains alkaline bicarbonate and various digestive enzymes. The digestive enzymes include pancreatic amylase, trypsin and pancreatic lipase, which can neutralize stomach acid, digestive sugar, protein and fat. The endocrine and exocrine function will be affected when patients receive whole pancreas and duodenum resection. Nutritional status of those patients will deteriorate. Here one case we reported was that the patient was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, received whole pancreas resection, with spleen preservation. His nutritional status significantly improved after appropriate nutritional support. Seventeen months after surgery the patient remains in very healthy condition.

    Clinical Observations of the Biological Electromagnetic Pulse Therapy on Improving the Quality of Life of Cancer Patients

    Objective: to observe the biological electromagnetic pulse therapy for improving the quality of life of patients with cancer.

    Method:  Applied biological electromagnetic pulse therapy on 108 cases of patients with cancer, once every 2 days, 10 times per course of treatment. Conducted comparison before and after the treatment with the QOL rating sheet for patients with cancer.

    Result: after a course of biological electromagnetic pulse therapy treatment, the findings on the cancer patient’s mental state, sleep, stamina and pain tolerance, etc.  have been improved. The score difference before and after the treatment is statistically significant (p<0.05), with obvious statistical differences (p<0.01) in sleep patterns and pain tolerance.  In summary, the total scores of quality of life for patients with cancer before and after the treatment have obvious statistical differences (p<0.01). All the patients displayed no adverse effects from treatment.

    Conclusion: The biological electromagnetic pulse therapy can improve sleep, pain tolerance, mood, stamina, etc. in cancer patients, subsequently improve their quality of life. It is worthy of clinical promotion.

    The Effect of Acupuncture and Moxibustion on the Activity of Peripheral Blood T Lympholeukocyte Subgroup and NK Cells of Colon Cancer Patients with Liver Metastasis

    Objective: To study the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on immune functions of colon cancer patients with liver metastasis.

    Method: 60 patients diagnosed with colon cancer, liver metastasis by pathology and imageology were treated by acupuncture and moxibustion therapy. Acupuncture points: Zusanli, Sanyinjiao, Neiguan, Shangjuxu, Hegu, Taixi, Taichong, Yinlingquan, Yanglingquan. Moxibustion points: Shenque, Guanyuan, Qihai, Zusanli. Before and after treatments, the number of CD3, CD4, CD8, T lympoleukocyte, and NK cells were tested by flow cytometry.

    Results: After treatment, the number of CD3, CD4, CD8 of T lympholeukocyte Subgroup and NK cells raised significantly compared to before treatments.

    Conclusion: Acupuncture and moxibustion can improve the immune function of colon cancer patients with liver metastasis.

    Effect of Modified Taohong Siwu Decoction on Patients with Chemotherapy-induced Hand-foot Syndrome

    Objective: To observe the effect of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, modified Taohong Siwu Decoction, versus pyridoxine on patients with hand-foot syndrome (HFS) from capecitabine, sorafenib, and gefitinib chemotherapy for gastric, lung, breast, colon, or rectal cancer. Quality of life of the patients were compared within each group.

    Methods: Patients were assigned randomly to group A or Group B. Group A was given modified Taohong Siwu decoction to soak hands and feet for 30 min, once daily. Group B was given 100 mg pyridoxine orally, twice daily. After a two-week treatment, the therapeutic effect was assessed by observing three major symptoms, including pain, ulceration, and muscular atrophy. This was assessed with the HFS-14 questionnaire.

    Results: Significant differences were observed between the two groups in pain relief, and improvement of daily life, walking, and interpersonal communication (P < 0.01). No significant differences in driving ability or interpersonal relationships were revealed. After two weeks, the effective rate was 88.3% in group A, which was significantly higher than the 50% in group B (P = 0.00).

    Conclusion: Modified Taohong Siwu Decoction is effective in the treatment of patients with HFS. It improves patients' quality of life according to the HFS-14.

    A Randomized Parallel Control Study on the Effect of Shugan Jianpi Decoction Combining Jiefu Kangai Decoction on Human Liver Cancer Cell Strain HpG2, IL-6 and IGF-IR

    Abstract:To observe the effect of Shugan Jianpi Decoction combining Jiedu Kangai Decoction on human liver cancer cell strain HpG2, IL-6 and IGF-IR. MMT, IL-6 ELISA and IGF-TR ELISA were tested after 24h, 48h, 72h, and 96h of co-cultivation of Shugan Jianpi Decoction, Jiedu Kangai Decoction and HpGa cell strain. C-DDP was used in Control Group. As a result, depression rate of MMT was 11.1%, depression rate of Jiedu Kangai Decocion was 72.8%, and depression rate of C-DDP was 74.7%. On comparison of Shugan Jianpi Decoction and Jiedu Kangai Decoction, P=0.000. On comparison of C-DDP and HpG2, P＜0.01. On comparison of Jiedu Kangai Decoction and HpG2, P＜0.01. On comparison of Shugan Jianpi Decoction and HpG2, P＞0.05. On Comparison of IGF-IR, C-DDP and HpG2, P＜0.01. On comparison of Jiedu Kangai Decoction and HpG2, P＜0.01. The effects of Shugan Jianpi Decoction and Jiedu Kangai Decoction on HpG2 cell strain are different.

    The Application Value of CT & MRI on Advanced Cervix Cancer Patient Treated by Fuzheng Kangai Decoction Combining RF Local Hyperthermia

    Objective: To discuss the application value of CT and MRI on advanced cervix cancer treated by Fuzheng Kangai Decoction combining RF local hyperthermia.

    Method: Clinical and image profiles of 56 advancer cervix cancer patients treated by Fuzheng Kangai Decoction combining RF local hyperthermia were collected. All patients were randomly examined by CT or MRI before and after treatments. All images were researched and analyzed statistically by two separate experts.

    Result: The 56 cases included 13 cases of Stage IIb, 32 cases of Stage III, and 11 cases of Stage IV. One case was treated by surgery because of colonic fistula caused by corpus uteri invasion. One case received double “J” tube implantation because of bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureterosis. 23 cases’clinical stages were modified after image examination, among which 21 cases graded, two cases were downgraded, and nine cases were compared before and after treatments. The image diagnosed stage was influenced in three cases because of radiation proctitis.

    Conclusion: Advanced cervix cancer patients treated by Fuzheng Kangai Decoction combining RF local hyperthermia achieved positive therapeutic effect. CT and MRI provided crucial directions to treatment.

    Discussion of the Effect of Sirikaya Lactone Bullatacin on the Apoptosis of Human Liver Cancer Cell Strain HpG2

    Objective: To study the effect of Sirikaya lactone Bullatacin on inducing the apoptosis of human liver cancer cell strain HpG2. 

    Method: The effect of Bullatacin on the cell proliferation of HpG2 was tested by MTT. The effects of Bullatacin on apoptosis and generation cycle of HpG2 and express of Fas protein were analyzed by propidium iodide staining (PI) and fluorescently-labeled monoclonal antibody (mAb) combining flow cytometry (FCM). The effect of Bullatacin on the express of Fas gene was tested by RT-PCR.

    Result: Bullatacin (100μg/mL) can significantly depress the generation of human liver cancer cell strain HpG2, with the depression rate of 66.3% in 96 hours. HpG2 was depressed at Stage G0/G1, and prevented to get into Stage G2/M with apoptosis inducement at the same time. Bullatacin can significantly raise the express of Fas protein on the cell surface of HpG2 (P=0.006), with better effect than C-DDP (P=0.03). Further research showed that Bullatacin can induce the express of Fas gene.

    Conclusion: Bullatacin can induce apoptosis of HpG2 cell. The probable mechanism is inducing the express of Fas gene which leads to the rise of Fas protein. This research provides theoretical and laboratory evidences of the study of Bullatacin as an anticancer drug.

    Abstract:Sirikaya lactone extracted from annonaceae plants has insecticidal, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. It has important anticancer attributes and potential clinical application value. To date, more than 400 kinds of Sirikaya lactone compounds are discovered, most of them prove to have anticancer activities. Significant progress has been made on the research of their anticancer capabilities.

    Interpretation of the ＂Toxin Evil＂ of Etiology

    Abstract:In this article, the “Toxin Evil” theory was interpreted as an important part of the etiology of TCM. The meaning of “Toxin Evil” and its significance in etiology of TCM was explained. The “Toxin Evil” is considered to be an individual eliological factor. Meanwhile, the characteristics of its occurrence and pahopoiesis are interpreted. “Toxin Evil” includes biological toxin evil, physical chemistry toxin evil and endogenous toxin evil. Its characteristic of occurrence is communicability. “Toxin Evil” can be combined with six exopathogens, and the development of the disease caused by it is rapid. Sometimes the occurrence is with eclipse period. The characteristic of its syndrome is that in the initial stage, the symptom is typical, and without obvious attributes of “Yin and Yang” or “Chills and Fever”. “Toxin Evil” can result in blood stasis, tumors, and sputum, etc. Different kinds of “Toxin Evil” have different influences on different organs, and the disease can be refractory with risk of recovery difficulty and massive internal damage.

    Research Progress of Mega Dose Vitamin C on Cancer

    Abstract :Research progress on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, from basic research to clinical practice, remains unsatisfactory. Chemotherapy has been the primary treatment for malignant tumors. Although it has some effect, it cannot selectively destroy cancer cells. As a result, patients suffer liver, kidney, GI dysfunction, and bone marrow suppression during chemotherapy, causing interruptions in treatment. The focus has been to seek effective, non toxic side effects, anti-cancer treatment during these few years without harmful side effects. Large doses of intravenous vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate, hereinafter referred to as: Vit C) as an alternative cancer treatment has been used since the early 1970s. Cameron et al have published large number of peer review papers at that time. However, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, cell biochemistry, immuno-histochemistry and other research were  lagging behind, thus the anticancer mechanism of vitamin C was generally accepted by main-strain medical doctors. The anticancer mechanism of IV vitamin C therapy gained great progress in the past ten years, and has achieved encouraging results.

    The Clinical Application of Acupuncture in the Integrative Treatment of Cancer

    Abstract: As an alternative non-invasive treatment method, acupuncture plays an important role in integrative therapies against cancer. It has become one of the most popular treatment methods for preventing and treating cancer today. We have applied it in clinical cancer treatment for almost two decades and obtained remarkable results. Acupuncture can improve the human body's immune function, reduce toxic side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, alleviate pain caused by cancer, accelerate post-operative recovery and significantly improve the general condition of cancer patients.

    Hyperthermic Chemo-Perfusion in Advanced Gastrointestinal Tumor Therapy

    Objective:To study the effects of using Infrared Ray Whole Body Hyperthermia (IR-WBH) therapy in conjunction with “Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic Chemo-perfusion” (IHCP) therapy for advanced gastrointestinal tumor.

    Methods:Administer IR-WBH and IHCP therapies to advanced gastrointestinal tumor patients. Observe the patients’symptoms, vital signs, images and survival time.
    Results:Complete and partial remission was 42.8% and stable rate was 31.4% in the treatment group. Lymph nodes and primary tumors also have significant findings. Survival rate has increased significantly.

    Conclusion:Combining IR-WBH and IHCP therapies are effective treatment methods for advanced gastrointestinal tumor.

    Local Hyperthermia Effects on Quality of Life after Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy of Head and Neck Tumor

    Objective: To conduct clinical research on preventing complications and side-effects in radiotherapy and chemotherapy of head and neck tumors.

    Methods: Administer an hour of radiofrequency hyperthermia radiotherapy within an hour of radiotherapy every other day. After each chemotherapy and radiotherapy of head and neck tumor, administer three more local hyperthermia.

    Results: The quality of life in 55.6% of the intervention-group patients showed improvement compared to 24% of the control group. The comparison between the two groups was statistically significant. The incidences of the control group reveal 46% poorer quality of life compared to 15.8% of the treatment group.

    Conclusion: Patients' quality of life can be improved by using local hyperthermia to counteract the complications and side effects in chemotherapy and radiotherapy of head and neck tumor.
