The 2nd academic meeting of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Society Specialty Committee of Natural Therapy (WFCMS-SCNT) was held in Foshan, Guangdong on 17 November, 2012. Over 100 specialists from North America, Germany, Hungary, New Zealand, Holand, Australia and Japan attended the meeting to exchange their ideas on the future development of natural therapy and on the advantages of integrative cancer treatments. Leading specialists gave academic reports during the meeting.

November 8, 2013, Clifford Hospital hosted the 32nd Annual Conference of the International Clinical Hyperthermia Society (ICHS) and the 3rd Annual Conference of The World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies-Specialty Committee of Natural Therapy (WFCMS-SCNT).

The conference provided a forum for researchers from around the world to discuss the application of hyperthermia and natural therapies in the treatment of diseases and cancer care. The conference brought over 600 medical experts from China, Germany, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Russia, Hungary, South Korea , etc. Professor Clifford L. K. Pang was privileged to become the president of the 32nd Annual Conference of the International Clinical Hyperthermia Society (ICHS). It was the first time someone from Asia was selected as the president of the conference since 1980.

A national academic seminar on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Medicine in Cancer Treatment was held at Clifford Hospital on September 27, 2014. This seminar was hosted jointly by the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies-Specialty Committee of Natural Therapy and Clifford Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. Its goal was to strengthen academic exchanges and development, and to improve the clinical prevention of tumor. Leading experts experienced in applying integrative treatment of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Medicine were invited to speak on the subject.

Professor Clifford L. K. Pang pointed out that Clifford Hospital had been dedicated to practicing Non-toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment since its inception. Apart from conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and biotherapy, Clifford Hospital strives to offer more alternative treatment for cancer patients. Clifford Hospital continually reaches out to specialists and scholars in this field to keep abreast of the latest integrative, non-toxic and people-oriented medical technology to benefit cancer patients.

During the seminar, experienced professors shared their advance knowledge of their relevant fields. Lectures were well-designed and informative, with primary focus on integrative cancer treatment, hyperthermia, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. 


Over 200 health care professionals from Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Shanxi, Nanjing, Hunan and Guangzhou, etc. participated. Keen interest in medical ozone in cancer treatment, chelation therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine was apparent. Many expressed interest in cancer patient referral to Clifford Hospital for Non-toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment.

The conference on the application of hyperthermia in oncology was held by Clifford Hospital on September, 28, 2014. The 200 participants comprised of specialists from World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies-Specialty Committee of Natural Therapy, Guangzhou Anti-cancer Association, Clifford Hospital and Southern Medical University Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine were invited to lecture on the topic. Executive president of Clifford Hospital, Dr. Zheng gave the opening speech. He asserts that hyperthermia is one of the most promising therapies of the Non-toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment. It had saved over ten thousand cancer patients. It is proven that hyperthermia could not only kill the cancer cell, but also have synergistic effect when combined with medical ozone, chelation therapy and acupuncture. He encouraged all participants to learn more about the efficacy of hyperthermia and promote the practice of hyperthermia in treating cancer.

Professor Clifford L. K. Pang, founder of Clifford Hospital and pioneer of Non-toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment, amongst others were presenters. His lecture was highly praised by the participants because of his abundant experience and amazing insight. In addition, other specialists, Dr Wang Yuandong, Dr. Lu Yimin, Dr. Ou Junwen also gave lecture on hyperthermia. The themes of lectures included specific clinical application and recovery process. There was active interaction in the question-and-answer sessions. After the seminar, participants from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia and Guangdong visited the Hyperthermia Department of Clifford Hospital. There they observed the medical staff practicing different hyperthermia systems. They thought highly of hyperthermia in oncology of Clifford Hospital and hoped to master the technology of hyperthermia as soon as possible and in the anticipation that hyperthermia could benefit more patients.

A provincial conference on Nutritional Metabolism and Herbal Cuisine was held at Clifford Hospital on October 25, 2014. Twelve guest speakers from Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an and Guangzhou were invited. Over 200 health care workers attended.
The lectures combined clinical practice with discussion of important nutrition issues. They further explained the application and development of a prescribed course of diet and nutrition.

Professor Clifford L. K. Pang’s lecture on “New Ideas in Modern Regimen” pointed out that in addition to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the treatment must include integrative therapy such as traditional medicine, modern medicine and natural medicine. He stressed natural medicine plays a pivotal role in health preservation.

A workshop on the Clinical Application of Medical Ozone Therapy in Diabetic Foot was held at Clifford Hospital on December 6, 2014.


A number of leading professors delivered lectures on the topics of “the Screening and Treatment of Diabetic Foot”, ”Application of Medical Ozone in Internal Medicine”, “Interventional Therapy in Diabetic Foot” and “Peripheral Nerve Damage and Interventional Therapy”.

Medical Ozone therapy is a form of treatment in which high purity medical ozone is applied to the human body for preventing and treating diseases. It is one of the most significant therapies of Non-Toxic Integrative Cancer Treatment pioneered by Clifford Hospital. Medical ozone has anti-microbial, anti-cancer and immunity improvement functional properties. It has been widely used to treat diabetic foot, cancer, disc disease, viral hepatitis, gynecological inflammations and cerebrovascular diseases. On December 20, 2014, Clifford Hospital hosted Guangdong Province continuing medical education program on “Patient Safety Management Seminar”. Over 200 participants comprised of nursing directors, head nurses and other medical management personnel attended. They were from 11 hospitals such as Guangdong Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, the Second Hospital of Guangdong Province Hospital of TCM, Guangzhou Panyu Hexian Memorial Hospital and Guangzhou Panyu Central Hospital.

Director Chen Weiju, Chairman of Nursing Management Branch of Guangdong Province Hospital Association, Deputy Chairman of Guangdong Province Nursing Association, emphasized that it is imperative to develop general nursing to advanced practice nursing and evidence-based nursing. Special attention was directed to patient safety, enhancing communication between physicians, patients, nurses, and developing the fundamental premise of patient- focused care model in the management and growth of the hospital. 

From July 10th to July 12th, 2015, the 33rd Annual Conference of the International Clinical Hyperthermia Society (ICHS) and 3rd international Oncotherm congress was held in Nidda, Germany. The conference provided a forum for researchers from around the world to exchange their ideas on the application of hyperthermia in cancer treatment. The conference attracted over 60 medical experts from Germany, Hungary, America, Canada, India, China, Japan and Korea, etc. 

As the President of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies - Specialty Committee of Natural Therapy (WFCMS-SCNT); President (2013) of International Clinical Hyperthermia Society (ICHS); President of Clifford Hospital; Professor and Advisor of doctoral candidates in Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Dr. Clifford L. K. Pang was invited to this conference.

He made a keynote speech at the opening ceremony and presented an academic report on “Clinical observation of local hyperthermia in combination with traditional Chinese medicine treating malignant seroperitoneum”. The medical experts were impressed by Prof. Clifford Pang’s research achievement. They appreciated the features of the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Hyperthermia, which achieve better clinical treatment outcomes and free of side effects; Clifford Hospital’s contribution to the research on natural medicine and integrative treatment on benign and malignant diseases.

The Director of Clifford Hospital International Natural Medicine Center, Dr. Zhang Xingting also presented an academic report “Clinical report of local hyperthermia in combination with traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine treating pelvic inflammatory disease”, which was highly praised by the participants.

These two academic reports showed the excellent treatment outcome of Non-Toxic Integrative Treatments for cancer. The conference medical experts showed a keen interest in these treatments, and eagerly viewed the brochures and folders of Clifford Hospital, which they hoped to visit and have further study at Clifford Hospital if possible.

In addition, due to Prof. Pang’s support for International Clinical Hyperthermia Society and his great contribution to regimen and integrative cancer treatment, Prof. Pang was invited to sign and leave words in Nidda’s journal by the Mayor Hans-Peter Seum, and had a group photograph taken. 

From May 5 to 8, ELCC (European Lung Cancer Conference) was successfully convened in Geneva, Switzerland. More than 4,000 thoracic oncology specialists from 83 countries and regions took part in this big conference. More than 3,000 academic papers were submitted to ELCC and 170 papers were selected to exchange, among which there are 17 papers from Mainland China. A paper from Clifford Hospital about high dose intravenous ascorbic acid synergy with mEHT in patients with advanced stage lung cancer was selected. The first author Prof. Ou Junwen was invited to this conference. 

The European Lung Cancer Conference is a collaborative effort of the most important multidisciplinary societies representing thoracic oncology specialists, all working towards a shared goal: to advance science, disseminate education and improve the practice of lung cancer specialists worldwide. This paper from Clifford Hospital medical scientific reseach team, collaboratively studied by Prof. Ou Junwen, oncology dept. and hyperthemia dept. aroused other specialists’ interest and attention in the conference. Besides, the abstract has been included in Annuals of Oncology.

The 18th World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) was successfully held in Yokohama, Japan from October 15 to 18, 2017. Over 7,000 industry leaders, professionals and researchers from more than 100 countries attended this international event. 

Dr. Ou Junwen from Guangdong Clifford Hospital in China was invited to attend this conference and her research paper on “A phase I-II clinical trial to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of high dose intravenous ascorbic acid synergy with mEHT in Chinese patients with stage III-IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer” was selected in the poster presentation session and has received wide attention from attendees.

According to Prof. Wu Yilong, there were over 300 papers submitted to the conference from mainland China and only 3 oral and 10 poster presentations were selected and accepted by international panel of reviewers. Prof. Wu, a leading expert in the field of lung cancer in China, has given high evaluation to Dr. Ou’s research and is willing to have a collaborative research project together in the future.

The study is focused on patients with stage III-IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and it is the first time to apply a high dose Vitamin C and modulated electrohyperthermia (mEHT) as treatment methods in China. The study has found that patients’ quality of life is improved when they receive the treatments and patients diagnosed with squamous cell lung cancer were sensitive to the above two treatments. 

Furthermore, this research paper has been selected as poster presentation on European Lung Cancer Conference in May and was included in the 2017 American Society of Clinical Oncology. Also, it was published in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in September with impact factors of 3.77 points. 

“High dose intravenous ascorbic acid synergy with mEHT” proves to notably improve quality of life of patients

Patients have lost the opportunity to remove the cancerous tissue in the advanced stage of non-small cell lung cancer. The side effects of chemotherapy and molecular targeting drugs often make it impossible for patients to complete the full treatment. People may ask if there is any possible way to prolong the life of the patient? Medical scientific research team from Clifford Hospital started their research topic on “High dose intravenous ascorbic acid synergy with mEHT” and the preliminary result has been exhilarating. 

In recent years, the research on high dose intravenous ascorbic acid synergy with mEHT has gradually aroused specialists’ interest and attention. Based on the previous research and reports, Dr. Ou’s team began their research topic on phase I-II clinical trial to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of high-dose intravenous ascorbic acid synergy with mEHT in stage III-IV non-small cell lung cancer and obtained the preliminary evaluation of the therapeutic effect on tumor. 

In this study, from the fasting blood ascorbic acid (AA) levels of 35 lung cancer patients, an interesting phenomenon was found ---fasting plasmas ascorbic acid levels were significantly correlated with stage of the disease. The later clinical stage the disease, the lower the fasting blood as ascorbic acid levels. According to the result of pharmacokinetics, when IVAA in combination with mEHT, the concentration of AA levels were significantly higher than in other treatment groups. Over the full cycle of the study, the average scores of the patients for the functioning scales continuously increased and the symptoms gradually decreased. Among those selected 15 patients who entered the phase I study, as per RECIST1.1 standard, 1 patient achieved complete remission (7%); 3 patients were in partial remission (21%); 5 patients were in stable condition (36%); 5 patients were (36%) in disease progression; 1 patient dropped out. The average 1 year survival rate was up to 71%. In addition, patients with squamous cell lung cancer gained more obvious treatment effect. 

This study points out that IVAA synergies with simultaneous mEHT is safe and the concomitant application significantly increases the plasma AA level for NSCLC patients. The quality of life is improved when they receive the above treatments. Patients diagnosed with squamous cell lung cancer were sensitive to the above two treatments. 

It is the first international study and may benefit patients with squamous cell lung cancer

It is the first study both domestically and abroad to use high dose VitC in combination with mEHT for advanced lung cancer patients. Some abroad studies have confirmed the amount of redox-active iron significantly increases in tumor tissues. When using high dose of VitC infusion in pharmacological concentration in this study, VitC reacts with iron molecules, which produces peroxide and free radicals. The peroxide of extracellular fluid can selectively destroy DNA of cancer cells, resulting in their death.
 
MEHT is a descendant of hyperthermia initially based on nano-thermal but not temperature-dependent effects of electromagnetic fields and special fractal modulation, whose effect could 3-4 times exceed the effect of the overall heating (macroscopic temperature elevation).Through thermal effect, it selectively damages and kills cancer cells, attaining treatment purpose.
 
This study finds out that the use of high dose of VitC in combination with simultaneous mEHT can obviously boost the peak concentration of VitC, which indirectly shows the combination of the above treatments has synergy effect to kill cancer.  
 
From the result of the study, 5 patients with squamous cell lung cancer gain good effect after using the above treatments. Their lesions have shrunk remarkably and even disappeared completely. Patients with squamous cell lung cancer were sensitive to these two treatments, but the specific mechanism remains unclear.
 
At present, squamous cell lung cancer, accounting for about 30% of NSCLC, is acknowledged as an intractable disease with limited treatment options. This study result is an undoubted blessing for patients with squamous cell lung cancer. Once the mechanism is confirmed, it will become a significantly prospective treatment option.   
 
Dr. Ou Junwen introduces that currently the research team is enlisting more advanced lung cancer patients to participate phase II clinical study. It aims to observe the treatment effect on progression-free survival time and overall survival time and to further define which pathological type is more sensitive to the above treatment, benefiting these group of patients.
 
 

The 35th annual conference of the International Clinical Hyperthermia Society (ICHS) and the 5th annual conference of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies - Specialty Committee of Natural Therapy (WFCMS - SCNT) was successfully held in Clifford Hospital in Guangzhou, China from November 24 to 26, 2017. Over 600 experts of Natural Medicine and Hyperthermia from more than 20 countries attended to this academic meeting.
